Home of the Kapahaka Group

It has been a while since the last blog entry due to the fact the Cannibal King 2 Production has been on. The Library has been home to the Kapahaka Group all week. We have had practices during our morning tea & lunch breaks & after school. Whaea Maja, Whaea Rhi & Mrs Maxwell have sacrificed a lot to get this group ready for production. Thanks to all the kids in the Kapahaka Group, YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

LIBRARY RULES

ILAVALAVA DAY

Following Samoan Language week we held an Ilavalava Day for all Staff & Students. Those who wanted to were able to come to school dressed in traditional Samoan dress or an Ilavalava. These girls are but few who came dressed for the occasion.

Teaching Students how to use "ANIMOTO"

ICT is an important class for all our students. It gives them a chance to research topics and learn how to use the programs to present their work.

We endeavor to teach them new and interesting ways to showcase their work.

Mrs Davis has introduced us to ANIMOTO. It is a fun and easy way for the Students to present their work in slideshow form. Here is an example of what one of the students in room 9 has created.

RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

This book is weird, wacky and shocking! do you BELIEVE IT? Believe it or not… In China they sell oven ready dogs at a street market in Lanzhou. This book will really freek you out!!! By Mata Rm22

This book is about a great pop star Michael Jackson about his life journey and a life of a legend. It has awesome pictures. This book shows you all the information you need to know about Michael Jackson and what he had done through his life.

We have been Celebrating Samoan Language by learning words that we can use every day.

THE SPORTS BOOK

The sports book is really cool because it’s all colourful and easy to read. It has animated pictures and diagrams to show you how they play the sport and the rules. It has so much information about all sorts of sports. The grass cover of the book looks very inviting and fun to feel.

OUR RESULTS FOR NZ POST BOOK AWARDS

The nominees for the New Zealand Post Book Awards 2010 were displayed in the Library last week. Students were given the opportunity to vote for the book of their choice. We collected 294 votes in total. All votes cast have been posted in to the NZ Post Book Awards and will go towards the overall tally. Official Winner will be announced on May 2010.

BOOK REVIEW: Miles to Go

"Miles to go" is written by the one and only Miley Cyrus with Hillary Liftin.

Miley describes her life in "Miles to go". If you are a big fan I definitely recommend it. Miley tells her story from past to future, her likes and her dislikes and everything she has been up to these days.

ANZAC Poppies

After the ANZAC service we placed the Poppies from our wall of remembrance on the cross in front of Memorial in Manurewa.

ANZAC Day Dawn Parade Manurewa

Before sunrise we gathered around the Memorial in Manurewa. Once the Returned Servicemen and Officials arrived the service began, it was very moving. Reveille was played just as the sun began to rise, it was a beautiful service. It was so nice to see some of the Teachers and Students from Randwick Park School there and so many of our rangatahi participating in Dawn Parade.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

ANZAC Day Display

During the week Students came into the Library and ICT to do research for Anzac Day. Using information and images gathered from the Internet, books and personal family stories we were able to created a display. Some students were able to find their grandparents who had served for the NZ forces during WWI and WWII using the Auckland Museum Cenotaph website. In memory of our Grandfathers, Great Grandfathers, Friends and Family who served and fought with the ANZACs we placed photos of them to our wall with an ANZAC Poppy. On Sunday we will take the Poppy's to dawn Parade in Manurewa to place them in the Wreath there. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Anzac Display. A lot of thought and hard work went into it and it looks fantastic.

Scholastic Book Club issue 3

The new Scholastic ABC, Lucky, Star & Arrow Book Club pamphlets have been given out to all classes. Please return orders & money to the School Office by Tuesday 4th May.

Thomas' Polyfest Report

On Friday 19 of March 2010 our RPS reporters went to the annual ASB Polyfest. This year was the 35th Anniversary of the event.

It was a fun action packed day. We saw lots of different cultures perform, there were Samoan, Tongan, Maori, Cook Island and Niuean Stages and lots of other groups performed during the breaks.
We interviewed TV Presenters, Students, Police Officers and heaps more. The saddest part of the day was leaving Polyfest, every one enjoyed their day, Especially me!

Cherokee's Polyfest Report

Attending Polyfest 2010 was the best experience this year!

Sheridan & I were the main Reporters for the Maori Stage. We had to interview people about the Polyfest & what makes it so Awesome. We spoke to a variety of people from all over Auckland, from different Schools and Church Groups, we even got to speak to Tiare from Pukana. It was interesting to hear what they had to say.

The best part of my day was watching the James Cook Kapahaka Roopu perform. They were inspiring to watch, one day I would like to perform as good as them.

For me the Maori stage was by far the best.

Being there to experience the different cultures through music and dance was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I will definitely be going back next year.

This year with the help of my School Librarians/ICT Mentors we will endeavor to keep you up to date with whats happening here in the Library & ICT Lab.

I'd like to say a big

THANKS

to all students who applied for the Librarian/ICT Mentor positions. It was hard trying to select from so many exceptional candidates. The Roster is now up in the library for viewing.

The Library & ICT Lab are now in full swing. It has been a great start to the year. Our new Librarian/ICT Mentors are taking on more responsibilities in 2010. Most of them have been selected to do extension work in the ICT so watch this space for updates of their mahi this term.

We have already ordered in hundreds of new books & subscribed to new Magazines which should keep our tamariki stimulated & well informed throughout the year.

"COOL READERS CLUB" forms are available from the Library office if you would like one. 87 Students have already signed up for 2010, get in quick as "COOL READERS" applications will close at the end of term 1.

If at any time you need to contact me, Whaea Maja, in the Library feel free to stop in for a chat or call the school number & ask to be put through to the Library.
